Free GitHub repo description and topics checker
Type your repo description and topics and see, in your browser, whether they fit GitHub's limits and avoid the usual mistakes. Nothing is uploaded or stored.
What it checks
For the description: length against the 350-character field limit, whether it is short enough to avoid being cut off in search results (about 120 characters is a safe target), vague openers such as "my awesome project", emoji, and a trailing URL. For topics: GitHub's rules, which are lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens, a name no longer than 50 characters, no more than 20 topics, plus a count check against the 6 to 10 that usually work best.
It checks form only. It can't tell you whether the description is accurate or whether the topics match what people really search for. For that, see the guide to writing descriptions and topics, and run your whole README through the README checker.
Want it written for you? README Rescue returns a rewritten README, a repo description and topic suggestions for $5. The result is AI-written, and anything it can't know is left as a marked placeholder.
