Bluesky character limit: counter and thread splitter

A Bluesky post can hold up to 300 characters, but the app counts graphemes (what you see as one character), not bytes, so an emoji or an accented letter counts once. Paste your draft below to see exactly how much room is left, and split anything longer into a numbered thread of posts that each fit.

The limits that matter

WhereLimit
Post text300 graphemes
Profile bio256 graphemes
Display name64 graphemes
Images per post4
Image alt text2,000 characters

These figures come from Bluesky's published AT Protocol lexicon definitions for posts and profiles. The platform can change them, so if the app disagrees with this page, trust the app.

Why graphemes, not characters

Bluesky stores post text as UTF-8 but enforces the 300 limit on graphemes, the units a reader perceives as a single character. A family emoji made of several joined code points counts as one, and so does a letter with a combining accent. The counter above uses your browser's Intl.Segmenter to count the same way. In a very old browser without it, the tool falls back to counting code points, which can over-count emoji.

Links and thread tips

A pasted URL uses up characters in the text like any other word, so a long link eats into your 300. When you split a thread, put the point of the post in the first part, because that is the part people see in feeds. The splitter breaks at sentence ends first, then at spaces, and never cuts a word in half unless one word alone is longer than a post.

Before you post a thread

Timing affects who sees the first post. Check which hours your own audience responds to with the free best-time-to-post checker, or make a shareable summary of your account with the free Bluesky stats card. For the full day-by-hour heatmap, format and length breakdown and CSV export, see Skyprint Pro ($4, one time). This counter runs entirely in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere. Skyprint is independent and not affiliated with Bluesky.
