Binoculars for glasses wearers: eye relief explained

If you wear glasses, the number that matters most after magnification is eye relief: how far behind the eyepiece your eye can sit and still see the whole picture. Get it wrong and you see a small black-edged circle, or you take your glasses off and lose sharpness.

What eye relief means

Eye relief is the distance, in millimetres, from the outer eyepiece lens to the point where your eye sees the full field of view. Glasses hold your eye further back, often 10 to 15 mm from your eye to the lens of the glasses alone, so a binocular needs more eye relief than someone without glasses requires. The common rule of thumb in birding guides is about 15 mm or more of usable eye relief for glasses wearers. This is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee: faces, frames and lens thickness differ.

Check it in four steps

  1. Read the listing. Look for "eye relief" in millimetres. If it is not listed, treat it as unknown.
  2. Look for twist-up eyecups. Fold them down for glasses and up when you take glasses off. Fixed rubber cups usually sit too far forward.
  3. Try them with your glasses on. Hold them as you would to watch a bird. You should see one full round image with no dark crescents at the edges.
  4. Check the return policy. If you cannot try a pair in a shop, buy from somewhere that accepts returns, and test them on day one.

Quick check: is this listed figure enough?

Which specs are easier with glasses

Magnification does not change eye relief on its own, but a high-power pair with a narrow field of view is harder to use through glasses because the edges are already clipped. An 8x with a reasonable field is the easier start. Use the binocular chooser and spec decoder to see field of view in metres at 100 m and to get a starting spec with the glasses question answered.

Where to look

Because eye relief is the figure to check, search for the spec and read the listing before you commit. These searches are affiliate links; I have not tested any pair, and I show no prices or ratings because they change.
