Causeway: the daily bridge puzzle

Every circle is an island with a number: how many bridges must touch it. Join all the islands into one network. One puzzle a day, the same for everyone, each checked by two separate programs to have exactly one answer and solvable by logic alone, with no ads and no account.

How to play

Each circle is an island and its number says how many bridges end there. Bridges run in straight lines, horizontally or vertically, between two islands with nothing between them. A pair of islands can be joined by one or two bridges. Bridges may not cross each other or pass over an island. When every number is met and all the islands are joined into one network, the puzzle is done.

Touch or mouse: tap an island, then tap a neighbouring island to add a bridge; tap the same pair again for a second bridge, and once more to remove them. You can also drag from one island to the next, or tap a bridge itself to cycle it. Keyboard: arrow keys move between islands; press Enter to select an island and then an arrow key adds a bridge in that direction (Escape lets go), or hold Shift with an arrow key to do it without selecting. An island fills in when its number is met, and gets a dashed outline when it has too many bridges. Check marks every bridge that is not part of the answer (it adds a check to your result) and Hint places one correct bridge for you (it adds a hint).

Stuck? The Causeway solver solves and explains any bridge puzzle you type in, and the guide to solving bridge puzzles teaches the techniques every Causeway puzzle can be solved with.

How scoring and sharing work

Every puzzle has exactly one answer, found by two independent programs, and can be solved by deduction without guessing. You earn three stars for no checks and no hints, two stars for up to two checks and hints together, and one star for any other finish. The grid grows through the week and the harder days need the loop rule from the guide: Monday 7×7, Tuesday 7×7, Wednesday 9×9, Thursday 9×9 (needs the loop rule), Friday 10×10, Saturday 10×10 (needs the loop rule), Sunday 12×12 (needs the loop rule). The new puzzle arrives at midnight on your own clock.
