How the puzzle works
A fleet is hiding in the grid. The number beside each row and above each column says how many of its cells are part of a ship. The fleet list says how many ships of each length there are. Ships are straight lines, horizontal or vertical, and no two ships touch, not even at a corner. A grey square is a ship cell the puzzle gives you, and a dot is open water that the puzzle gives you. Everything else is for you to work out. If you are new to this, the step-by-step guide walks through a whole board.
What the levels mean
Every puzzle is checked by a search that counts solutions, and the generator only keeps boards with exactly one. The level then decides how much reasoning a board needs. Easy adds extra given cells, so most moves are simple counting. Medium leaves fewer clues and sometimes asks you to try one cell and see if it breaks the rules. Hard asks for a two-step "what if" on some boards, and on 8 × 8 it can take a second or two to make. The puzzle number is a seed: the same size, level and number always give the same board on any device, so you can note a number and come back to it, or tell a friend which one to try.
